You may know that Werner is the first name of Heisenberg, the guy Walt got his alter-ego name from.

Essentially, both guys really screwed Gus Fring over, and Mike took it upon himself to execute them so a far more cruel Gus Fring wouldn't do it.

Two very similar execution scenes by Mike of geniuses who really fucked up, but both have different paths.

Both were allowed one final phone call, but both made very different sorts of calls.

Here's how Werner's scene ended:

Werner called his wife and told her off, made himself seem like a total ass (when the truth is all he wanted to do was see her again, but this way she would be safe from death).

Here's how it was resolved in Breaking Bad:

Walt had called Jesse Pinkman to kill the other Meth scientist, Gale, so that Walt himself became the only person who could complete the task.

The moral of the story? Only psychopaths survive in the criminal world of Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul.

Another interesting note. Look at the gun in Mike's hands during the Werner execution scene, and look at Walt's in this scene - and note that it was Mike's gun that Walt shot him with:
