It’s a Verhoevenian take on the Super hero genre. A mix of commercialism, satire, dark comedy, and other similar elements. Robocop, Starship Troopers, Showgirls, Total Recall, etc... And it does cut to scenes of commercials, detail graphic violence, and all the stuff you’d see in a film like Deadpool, except it reaches for deeper themes.

The dialogue in this show is fantastic, the themes are entertaining, and I really dig the idea of taking a more populace view of a world with superheroes, looking at the consequences to everyday humans. Also, the writing is very self aware in the way shows like Archer, Always Sunny, and the film Deadpool are.

Anyway, it’s superheroes on the surface, “The Seven” are basically the Justice League or Avengers, and they are run as a multi-billion dollar business. The superman style view the public all has of them is an image control thing. The heroes all have different personalities, but imagine the mentality of what being so physically superior to everyone and everything can do to ones psychology? But not where they’re rejected like in X-Men, but when they’re accepted and thrust on a pedestal. The show is as much about rock stars, Justin Bieber, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Harvey Weinstein, and Jeff Bezos as it is about super heroes.

Anyway, I’m generally not a fan of superhero films, but when they go directions like this, I love them!

Here’s the opening clip with Homelander, who is kind of a Superman character.

It’s an Amazon Prime show.
