Aliens: Colonial Marines
- Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.
I got the Collector's Edition for $36. Sold the DLC for $6.50. Game trades in for $14 at EB right now. Figured for under $20 it was worth it for just the extras alone (statue is purrtay)
Yeah, I decided to give it a shot. This game is certainly not what you think it is. I think the main reasons people dislike this game are:
1) the trailers are completely the opposite of what this game is. It's NOT fast-tempo, constant-action game. It's almost like a survival horror FPS. Much, much closer to Dead Space than Halo but with even less volume of enemies.
2) the game is HARD. I'm playing on Normal and am getting my ass handed to me. One xenomorph can completely fuck you up if you're not careful because of how the health system works (3 small bars; you lose a bar, you can't recover until you get a med kit...and they ain't that plentiful). And I just recently beat Black Ops 2 on Veteran without getting stuck anywhere
3) most people played it before the update or not at all based on reviews that didn't include the update. The xenomorphs are smart and aggressive in this game, not passive and idiots who get stuck on walls. They will go through vents, up walls, and under metal grate walkways and jump up and fuck you up.
4) graphics are about 2009 level. Not horrible but not nearly as good as, say, Halo 4. But certainly nothing that'll stop you from playing the game or look so bad it's that noticeable (Duke Nukem was bad enough to be noticeable)
There's lots to like about this game. Voice acting is good (they got Hicks to do some voice acting), they use the music and sound effects from the movie, and you're always watching where you're going, engaged in the game. It's a direct storyline sequel to Aliens and it's done relatively well. It also has drop-in, drop-out multiplayer which is I think a good chunk of the reason it's so hard. Game is meant to be played multiplayer.
This is not the disaster of a game everyone's making it out to be. If anything, I'm actually enjoying it and wanna play it some more. I bought the CE solely for the extras and was only gonna give the game a quick little try before trading it in the next day. I liked it enough to hang on to it and am looking forward to playing some more. That's much more than I can say for Dead Island Riptide which was a horrible piece of shit that I stopped playing after an hour and a half because I couldn't stand it anymore

The problem with A:CM was the outright bait-and-switch deception. Like you said, 2009 graphics for a game that was demo'd with 2012 graphics. And a lot of bad gameplay bugs/designed, even if they were fixed later on, equates to a horrible launch.

But what I'm saying is this ain't nearly as bad a game as it's been made it out to be. If anything, it's pretty fun. Worth your $10 try while you wait a couple months for everything to come out
