I called DirecTV about 3 months ago after my original lease with my roommate on my DVR ran out. I had to open an account with DTV last year to get a dish installed at my apartment. Everything went great and the install was awesome aside from drilling a hole into the next apartment's wall accidentally.

So I signed up for HBO, Showtime and got Encore/Starz for free for 3 months. It runs out this billing cycle so I called up to see what specials they had and was happy to find that I could keep all three for the original price I was paying.

I inquired about the HD-DVR and after some arm twisting I got them to wave the HD-DVR entirely! Monday I get it installed, move my DVR to my bedroom and the new HD-DVR goes to the living room.

SOOOOO HAPPY!!!!

Just as you need an HD TV to watch HD channels, you need a different HD Tuner to record HD channels on a DVR.

I've had an HDTV for almost 1.5 years now and I still have yet to even order HD channels. Part of the problem is my DVR is a self built HTPC running BeyondTV, so I'd need a separate tuner to do HD. And... I'd have to pay the $5 for HD Channels a month, plus $8/month for the converter box... After all that I'm not even sure if the PC would display the channel in actual HD. Never figured it worth the hassle.

You got DirecTV?

Yup. Which means that I'll need them to replace the dish with the HD-dish as well, but apparently it's pretty easy to tell them that Dish Network is offering all of this stuff for free and DirectTV will cave. :)

Bah, the Dish companies are running scared. I've seen DishTV and it totally blows.

The only reason I'm thinking of waiting is because my contract with DirectTV is up in June and then it might be time to move to FIOS.
