According to this page, 360 does support a high-def video format for movies. The problem is trying to get the right converter to change MKV/AVI/etc files to WMV. I found Prism Video Converter, but it doesn't support 5.1 audio for WMV.

The 360 does support other formats than WMV for playback, so I might be able to get away with a high-quality AVI with 5.1. I'm playing around with it now, but I was wondering if anybody else has already done the legwork.

My goal is to try to get a 1080p (@ 5.1) to the same resolution and no artifacting that still plays on the 360.

Everything works with that other than very rare occassions. The only issue is you don't get the subs with the mkv's since you're technically not turning them "on"

Yes, I know. I'm using that. You still can only play certain formats.

What formats are you having a hard time playing? I very rarely run into something it can't play and just avoid mkvs since it doesn't turn on the subs

It's turning into a 32GB WMV. It will at least play WMV of any size. Taking 3 days to reencode. I'll play it today to see if it's any good.

What the fuck do you have that's a 14GB avi? 5 seasons of a TV show?

I have a 3GB 720p Xvid Director's Cut of Watchmen. Streams to either the PS3 or 360 just fine.

I try not to make watching a movie overly complicated. I want it to be simple. I've thought about getting some of the higher resolution formats but it looks like so much work.

Edit:

Actually, the final product isn't 720p but it still looks fine to me. Even on the 60" DLP.
